House of WORTH (2)

Worth was not afraid to try new things when he felt they were right. He introduced the "Princess Line", named after the Princess Eugenie (see example upper right, silk afternoon dress with lace jacket, 1889) This line was introduced in the early 1870s and eliminated the need for the crinoline, which was falling out of favor. By changing the way the dress pieces were cut, it gave a slimmer line and did away with the voluminous crinoline.

Charles designed dresses and coats with large-scaled floral prints. The Tulipes Hallandaises is a custom designed fabric coat from 1889 where the large scale of the sleeves and the large scale of the tulips were designed for each other.

For those of you who are Downton Abbey fans, I'm sure you are familiar with the scene above with Lady Sybil showing off her lovely pantaloons outfit for her family. While this scene was taking place in 1913, such an outfit was designed by Worth in 1870 (see above, left)
